The difference between capacity and desire

Jul 14, 2024

I recently had a friend of mine ask me: “Don’t ever just get tired of trying to keep up with everything? Trying to figure out the future and what to do next?” My answer to her was ABSOLUTELY I DO! I have been guilty of burning myself out with my own fiery expansiveness time and time again. I have learned over the years that the only way to move solidly into the future, is to attend to only what is in front of me first.

I have gone down the shame rabbit hole when I can’t quite keep up with my own “to-do” list. Have you found yourself just shutting down or giving up….the nervous system going into “freeze” mode when you feel into all the things you want to be doing and creating?

This has been a constant dilemma for me as an entrepreneur for 15 years. Also as a highly creative and intuitive individual, sometimes I find it’s confusing to feel and see so much….at times, I’ve had a hard time discerning what is actually something I need to be actively working on, versus just “downloads” I am receiving about what is to come. When we are intuitive, sometimes we get flooded with inspiration and creative ideas, but I’ve learned over the years that not everything that comes into our awareness needs our immediate attention or action. This is because sometimes our DESIRES that light us up are WAY bigger than our nervous system has the CAPACITY to hold at any given time.

Intuitive and energetic discernment is SO IMPORTANT for this reason–because when we don’t know the difference between our capacity and our desire, it really gets confusing and leads to shut-down, freeze, and ultimately shame. This has been such a huge issue with the professionals I mentor–how to build their business, their intuition, and also show up to the daily tasks that are required to stabilize their lives.

If you are struggling with this, first I would say you are someone with a HIGH level of DESIRE and I would suggest you ACKNOWLEDGE yourself for being such a highly creative, expansive individual! It is a GIFT that you have so many ideas and creative juice. Really honor this part of yourself. Second, I would tune into your body and what is right in front of you. Is what is right in front of you completed? If not, what needs to be done to complete these tasks? If you jump ahead of what is right in front of you, you actually will burn out because there’s no stability in your current reality. We must manage our desire so it works for us, not against us.

Once the tasks that are right in front of you are completed, THEN move towards what is exciting and expansive and fun. Another tip I would give you, is that following what feels expansive (what feels like it’s already flowing forward with the least amount of resistance?) is actually the next step forward. This doesn’t mean don’t work hard–it means work hard for the right things….the things that are truly a YES in your heart. Once THIS task is completed….look at the next thing that is right in front of you. Then continue forward in this way.

Every step of the way I PAUSE and check in with my energy levels, my body, and if I am pushing past my ACTUAL capacity. The minute I feel my nervous system begin to shut down and freeze and go into overwhelm, I take a break. I take a few days of self care, and slowing down. I re-center. And every time I do this, the next right step is presented.

This is the easiest, simplest strategy I have implemented that feels sustainable for me, and the many creative projects I have going constantly. I LOVE creating…my work is my canvas, but every artist needs to recharge.

I am so excited about making this more accessible to individuals all over the world, who are hungry to connect with other like-minded professionals who are also seekers of deeper embodiment and intuition!

These workshops truly feed my soul, I absolutely LOVE connecting with you all.
Please reach out with any questions.

Warmly,
Jess
